What is Wool?

Wool has been available ever since the sixth day of creation.  It is essentially the fleece of sheep and goats whose wool structure  varies, depending on its breed.  People enjoy wool today in the same way they did hundreds of years ago, because they appreciate its superior qualities even a century later.  Even though there is an assortment of textile fibers available today, scientists have been unable to create a fabric containing the amazing advantages and natural benefits of wool.  It remains a masterpiece of design and provides a safe, sanitary, comfortable and healthy sleep situation.  The following factors determine the quality of the wool:

  • The breed of the animal
  • Body part; Wool from the back of the animal is the most valuable; Least valuable is from the abdomen and legs
  • Sheerness of yarn
  • Curling and length
  • Elasticity
  • Whiteness
  • Cling-free material

Australia, New Zealand, Argentina and South Africa are the main wool manufacturers in the world.

……For Your Information

When speaking about wool, you will likely hear the term Grams per Square Meter, usually abbreviated as GSM.  This means the amount of fabric woven into one square meter.  While towels and bathrobes have as many as 300 to 800 GSM, other fabrics may have values as low as 100 GSM.  This same term is used to describe toilet paper and other tissues (usually between 18 to 22 GSM) as well as paper towels (35-50 GSM)

At Fronzoni, you will find wool filaments that are soft and high-quality and extra fine because they are produced from the yarn shorn of the animal’s first cut.  Cheaper wool bedding is available, but these are produced from subsequent cuts of the animal, which makes the fiber rougher and less comfortable to sleep on.
